Kathmandu – In recent years, smartphone production in India has increased significantly, but in Nepal, the share of smartphones imported from China has grown remarkably. According to the latest figures from the Nepal Customs Department, imports from China continue to rise during the first seven months of the current fiscal year.
The data shows that 1,204,577 smartphones were imported from China alone, accounting for 85.13% of the total imports during this period. In the same period last fiscal year, 953,216 smartphones were imported from China, representing 77.50% of the total imports.
Overall, total smartphone imports increased from 1,229,957 units in the first seven months of the previous fiscal year to over 1,401,400 units in the current fiscal year, an increase of nearly 200,000 units.
Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Honor, and Realme, along with American Apple and South Korean Samsung models assembled in India, are being imported less from India.
During the same period last fiscal year, India exported 272,066 smartphones to Nepal, but in the current fiscal year, only 204,658 units were imported from India, representing just 14.46% of total imports.
Previously, Vietnam also contributed a significant number of smartphones to Nepal. Although the Indian government increased its budget for electronics industry promotion in fiscal year 2026/27, its impact on the Nepali market remains limited.
Overall, as total smartphone imports increase in Nepal, China’s market share continues to strengthen, while the proportion of imports from India is declining.
